Historical Geomorphological Significance of Clathrate Hydrate

An interesting scenario speculated in the event known gas hydrates in present climate cycles. Kvenvolden suggested that gas hydrate deposits on polar continental shelves were present in most vulnerable communities due to climate change. Extensive shelves were exposed to cold surface temperatures (-10 to -20 'C), a significant transformation from warmer polar oceans. The polar shelve surfaces, therefore, have experienced at +10'C or more change over at least the past 10,000 years. If this suggestion is correct, then the escape of methane from assumed hydrate deposits on the polar continental shelve should be observable.

Considering the role of hydrates in Paleolithic times, hydrates may have served as 'building' platforms in stabilizing shelves during the Holocene period in the development of Antarctica and Greenland. Ice core samples taken from Antarctica and Greenland show that the dissipation of methane into the atmosphere was far less during this period.

Scenarios of past global climate change cycles caused by methane release from clathrate hydrate are still highly speculated; disbelief amongst academics that methane release in Arctic biomes fail to show the extent in change of climate cycles. The lack of data found even in the IPCC reports, showed insignificant data on the extent of clathrate hydrate regarding the total methane release into the atmosphere, accounting for approximately 3/4 of the entire methane storage globally. The record of escarpments by clathrate hydrate during the Paleocene and Holocene periods, although possible caused by caused by gas-hydrate dissociations, do not provide compelling evidence that methane actually affects the global climate. With respect to human welfare, it will become immediately relevant that clathrate hydrates role in an geo-health realm be deciphered.

If on the safe side, we do not perturb clathrate hydrate stability zones but continuing societal practices that enhance global climate change, yet a further comprehensive study would allow proper remediation to succeed, goes underway.
